A day to celebrate Luigia Carlucci Aiello, a pioneer of artificial intelligence research in Italy and of AI education at Sapienza University.
Luigia Carlucci Aiello has been part of many key institutions in both Italian and international research throughout her career: from the CNR in Pisa, where she worked after graduating in mathematics from the Scuola Normale Superiore, to Stanford, and finally to Sapienza University of Rome, where she taught from 1982 until her retirement in 2015. She was also the President of the Italian Association for Artificial Intelligence (AIxIA), which she founded in 1988.
Her experience as a researcher, professor, and leader of numerous international projects—and above all as a pioneer in artificial intelligence, a field that has evolved from a frontier discipline in the 1970s to a cornerstone of contemporary science and technology—represents an important example for present and future generations. For this reason, the celebration of her career and the awarding of the academic honor of Sapienza Ambassador in front of the Italian AI scientific community is accompanied by a broader reflection on women’s careers in STEM, engaging the next generation of scientists who may follow in her footsteps.
The event, organized by Sapienza University of Rome and the Department of Computer, Control and Management Engineering “Antonio Ruberti” (DIAG), in collaboration with the Italian Association for Artificial Intelligence (AIxIA), the National Laboratory CINI for Artificial Intelligence and Intelligent Systems (AIIS), and the Future Artificial Intelligence Research Foundation (FAIR), will take place in Rome, at the Sapienza Aula Magna, on Monday, September 30, 2024, from 9:30 AM to 1:00 PM.
