It was drafted by a committee of fourteen experts in the field and aims to support the Italian Government in defining a national regulatory and strategic framework for AI.

The Committee analyzed the impact of this technology on society and the economy in order to develop a strategic plan that will guide the development of artificial intelligence in a responsible and inclusive way, bringing together all national resources—from research institutions to businesses and public administration.

According to the Government’s objectives, the document aims to create an environment in which AI can develop safely, ethically, and inclusively, through a set of strategic actions grouped into four main areas: Research, Public Administration, Businesses, and Education. The strategy also outlines a monitoring system for its implementation and an analysis of the regulatory context in which it will be applied.

FAIR is widely referenced in the document, in light of its role as the main point of contact with the Ministry of University and Research (MUR) for the implementation, coordination, and management of the extended partnership related to the thematic area “Artificial Intelligence: Foundational Aspects,” funded under the PNRR. In particular, FAIR is central to strategic action R.1, focused on strengthening the Italian research ecosystem. The document emphasizes that “further investment in promoting the initiative will be essential for the development of research, also with a view to expanding the partnership.”

Giuseppe De Pietro, President of the FAIR Foundation, commented: “We are pleased to note that the FAIR Foundation has been identified as a key reference point for the Italian AI research ecosystem. The importance that the national strategy assigns to foundational research, also in synergy with the productive sector, businesses, and public administration, further strengthens the path that FAIR is pursuing to contribute to the future of AI in Italy.”

Marco Conti, President of FAIR’s Scientific Committee, added: “Within the structure of the Italian AI Strategy 2024–2026, we find all the main strategic objectives that underpin the research carried out daily by FAIR: the development of human-centered, trustworthy, and sustainable AI; the need to invest in scientific research to position Italy as a leading player in AI innovation, with particular attention to the development of Italian LLMs; and the importance of attracting and retaining AI talent in Italy, starting from advanced education, with the national PhD program at its core, developed in close synergy with FAIR.”

The full document of the Italian Strategy for Artificial Intelligence 2024–2026 was published online yesterday.
