{"id":4478,"date":"2024-11-26T14:53:00","date_gmt":"2024-11-26T13:53:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fondazione-fair.it\/?p=4478"},"modified":"2026-04-24T14:07:01","modified_gmt":"2026-04-24T12:07:01","slug":"minerva-7b-the-new-frontier-of-italian-language-models-unveiled-by-sapienza","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fondazione-fair.it\/en\/news\/minerva-7b-the-new-frontier-of-italian-language-models-unveiled-by-sapienza\/","title":{"rendered":"Minerva 7B: the new frontier of Italian language models unveiled by Sapienza"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Italy strengthens its role in artificial intelligence with the launch of <strong>Minerva 7B<\/strong>, the new version of the language model developed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uniroma1.it\/it\/pagina-strutturale\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sapienza University of Rome<\/a> within the <strong>FAIR<\/strong> (Future Artificial Intelligence Research) framework, funded by the PNRR and developed in collaboration with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cineca.it\/it\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>CINECA<\/strong><\/a>, which provided access to the <strong>Leonardo<\/strong> supercomputer.<\/p>\n<p>Minerva 7B is a fully Italian <strong>Large Language Model (LLM)<\/strong>, created by the <a href=\"https:\/\/nlp.uniroma1.it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sapienza NLP research group<\/a> led by <em>Prof. Roberto Navigli<\/em>. With 7 billion parameters\u2014more than double the previous version\u2014it represents a significant advancement in natural language understanding and generation in Italian. The model has been trained on a massive dataset of <strong>1.5 trillion words<\/strong> and refined through advanced <strong>instruction tuning<\/strong>, enabling it to produce more accurate, relevant, and safe responses while reducing issues such as hallucinations and ensuring appropriate outputs.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Innovation and collaboration<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The project, developed within the PNRR framework, involved 15 researchers and PhD candidates from Sapienza, alongside key partners such as <strong>CINECA<\/strong> and NVIDIA.
